When Vashti was a little girl, she was playing games with her brothers, John and George. When anyone knocked on the door, the children thought it was real funny to say 'Come in if your britches afre buttoned." No one lived close, so they were expecting one of their brothers to open the door.
Suddenly, there was laoud knock at the door. Vashti yelled, "Come in if your britches are buttoned." The door swung open and there stood a young man who was friend of Pa's and had stopped by to see him.
Vashti was so humiliated and embarassed she could not face that man her whole life through. She said in later years that even if she heard his name, she felt embarassed and recalled the day when she told him to 'Come in if your britches are buttoned."
