One time Ma sent Clyde, the youngest to the hill to pick green beans fro dinner from the garden. There was a visiting preacher in town and he was planning to come for dinner and spend the night with the Clarkes'. Clyde had a little dog named Buster that followed his everywhere. As Clyde started toward the hill to pick beans, Buster was in his usual place right at his heels. When he got to the bean patch, Buster spotted a skunk and took off after it.
Clyde picked the beans and started back home. Buster raced to catchup with him, and ran right past him into the house and under the bed where the guest preacher was to sleep.
It became all too obvious in a matter of minutes that Buster had caught up with the skunk, but he had gotten the worse end of that deal. Clyde and the boys tried to coax him out from under the bed, Buster rolled over and over making a game of it, but filling the room with skunk scent.
Ma was most upset, knowing their company would arrive soon. The boys finally got Buster out, but the horrible scent remained. Ma tried some quick scouring and cleaning, but to no avail.
When the preacher arrived, the older boys quickly showed him his room as they thought the whole thing quite funny since Ma was so upset.
The preacher stuck his head in the door of the bedroom and said, "Oh, Mrs. Clarke, I can't stay in there."
Much to Ma's embarassment and to the boys snickers, other sleeping arrangements had to be made for the visiting preacher and neddless to say, Clyde and Buster knew to keep their distance from Ma that day.
