Opportunities for young people to get together in the country in the early 1900's consisted of church and nwighborhood gatherings.
Martha and Vashti always went to Sunday School every Sunday in Danleyton. After Sunday School was over, a group of young people would walk on to the Old Regular Baptist Church where they held a foot-washing service that lasted until 2:00 or 3:00 P.M. Vashti, being a teenager, wanted to go as it was a good opportunity to be with other teenagers and for the girls to see the fellows. Martha, being a good bit younger, didn't see the point, but if the crowd was going, then she was too.
It was there, Vashti met her future husband, Virgil, at an old log church at Old Steam. Virgil had a nice covered buggy and horse and he'd take Vashti back home in his buggy. Martha would walk along side or behind withthe crowd.
Such were the courting ways of young people then.
