Laura, the daughter of Rufus and Vashti (Fitch) Swearingin, was born in 1862 and raised in Greenup, Kentucky.
Her father, Rufus, trained horses for Old Doc Spaulding and he later drew a Civil War pension, as he had served in the war; her mother, Vashti had a poll parrot. Their family inckluded three boys in addition to Laura.
Her family were loyal members of the Methodist Church and had a nice home in Greenup with a large red tufted sofa and melodian.
When Laura was grown, she went to live with her brother, Bob, and his wife in Ironton, Ohio. While live there she worked as a dressmaker and came home to greenup on weekends.
Later, when Laura was married and had a large family of her own, she often took the children to visit their grandparents in Greenup.
