LAURA ELLEN SWEARINGIN

1862 - 1923

Laura, the daughter of Rufus and Vashti (Fitch) Swearingin, was born in 1862 and raised in Greenup, Kentucky. Her father, Rufus, trained horses for Old Doc Spaulding and he later drew a Civil War pension, as he had served in the war; her mother, Vashti had a poll parrot. Their family inckluded three boys in addition to Laura.

Her family were loyal members of the Methodist Church and had a nice home in Greenup with a large red tufted sofa and melodian.

When Laura was grown, she went to live with her brother, Bob, and his wife in Ironton, Ohio. While live there she worked as a dressmaker and came home to greenup on weekends.

Later, when Laura was married and had a large family of her own, she often took the children to visit their grandparents in Greenup.
