GEORGE CLARKE

XXXX - XXXX

George Clarke*, Anthony's youngest son, left Greenup, Kentucky with saddlebags and walked to Hindman, Kentucky in 1889 with the intention of becoming a lawyer. Only seventeen families lived in this rural Appalachian mountian town at the time and there was feud going on among them. George saw the dire need of a settlement school, so he built one. People were so hungry for education that adults came, widows and old men, some in overalls, some with a shoe of a kind and some barefooted. Many didn't know their A, B, C's. If they had money to pay, George accepted it; if not, they were welcome anyway.

Lucinda Hayes taught in George's school and theywere later married. They built a big fine home in Hindman constructed from stone taken from their property. There was a large main hall in the house with many rooms opening from it. George lived in Hindman for the remainder of his life, but visited his family often in Danleyton.

Six children were born to George and Lucinda. They were Edith (who died as a child), Thelma, Margie, Shelby, Bre\ament and Topsy. Thelma and Topsy, like their parents became teachers. Margie became a nurse. Shelby was killed. Brament had a store in Hindman and died in 1976.

There is a statue erected in Hindman, Kentucky in front of the remains of George's home to honor this true pioneer in education.
